Tom Noddy is the Much Stoatley village idiot. He can mostly be found in and around the church, where his capers and buffoonery cause minimal damage to property and persons. Everyone is astonished that Tom has survived as long as he has, because he is always getting into mortally perilous slapstick situations and emerging unscathed. Touched by the hand of God many believe, attributing divine intervention to his numerous dunderheaded liaisons with the grim reaper.
